Hi, Iām NICHOLE MONTANEZ.
I am an artist living and working in Florence, CO. I received a BA in Fine Art from CSU, Pueblo then immediately went to work in a newsroom. Since then I have straddled the worlds of fact and fiction. My most ambitious body of work was a documentary photo series on critically ill children and their fight to use cannabis to treat intractable epilepsy and other life-threatening illnesses. The project spanned nearly a decade. When it ended in 2020 I began painting again.
I spent 5 years exploring flowers as subject in an attempt to give visual representation to imagined spaces between this realm, the next and the very real, yet imperceptible, phases along the way. But my first and strongest inspiration continues to be the human face. So at the beginning of 2025, I returned. This time I picked up a box of crayons in favor of a camera. And although mediums change, the work always speaks to the delicate, fleeting nature of life and the human condition.
I will be hosting a retreat at the end of September to include a 4-day workshop to explore crayon as a serious art medium. Come color with me!
